Each individual applying to the department for registration as a special conservator of the peace must meet the mandated entry-level training herein established unless provided for otherwise in accordance with this chapter.\n\nB. The entry-level training hour requirement by category, excluding examinations, practical exercises and range qualification, shall be:\n\n1. Unarmed special conservator of the peace – 24 hours\n\n2. Armed special conservator of the peace – 40 hours\n\nC. The entry-level training course content by category, excluding range qualification, shall be as provided in this subsection.\n\n1. Unarmed special conservator of the peace. The entry-level curriculum for unarmed special conservator of the peace sets forth the following areas identified as:\n\na. Orientation – 2 hours\n\n(1) Virginia law and regulations\n\n(2) Ethics and professional conduct\n\n(3) General duties and responsibilities\n\n(4) Registration and training requirements\n\n(5) Disciplinary actions and sanctions\n\nb. Code of Virginia – 4 Hours\n\n(1) Juvenile law\n\n(2) Crimes against peace and order\n\n(3) Crimes against persons\n\n(4) Crimes against property\n\n(5) Crimes against health and safety\n\n(6) Crimes involving fraud\n\nc. Constitutional law, civil law, due process, legal procedure – 4 hours\n\n(1) United States Constitution\n\n(2) Virginia Constitution\n\n(3) Legal terminology and definitions\n\n(4) Limitations and liability\n\n(5) Magistrates, grand jury and courts\n\nd. Arrest procedures – 8 hours\n\n(1) Legal authority and related issues\n\n(2) Probable cause\n\n(3) Laws of arrests\n\n(4) Warrants\n\n(5) Summons\n\ne. Use of force – 4 hours\n\n(1) Confrontation management\n\n(2) Liability issues\n\n(3) Deadly force\n\n(4) Use of restraints\n\nf. Rules of evidence – 1 hour\n\n(1) Types of evidence\n\n(2) Chain of custody\n\n(3) Admissibility of evidence\n\ng. Court room testimony – 1 hour\n\nTotal hours – 24 hours\n\n2. Armed special conservator of the peace.\n\na. Unarmed special conservator of the peace core subjects – 24 hours\n\nb. Entry-level handgun training (refer to 6VAC20-230-190) – 14 hours (includes dry fire, judgmental shooting and low-level light shooting familiarization)\n\nc. Entry-level shotgun training, if applicable (refer to 6VAC20-230-200) – 2 hours\n\nTotal hours (excluding examinations and range qualification) – 40 hours","path":["Title 6.
