Earned a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in history and social sciences; or\n\n2. Earned a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and completed 51 semester hours of coursework distributed in each of the following areas:\n\na. History: a major in history or 18 semester hours in history (shall include coursework in American history, Virginia history, and world history and may include African American history);\n\nb. Political science: a major in political science or 18 semester hours in political science, which shall include coursework in American government (state and local government);\n\nc. Geography: nine semester hours; and\n\nd. Economics: six semester hours.\n\nAll candidates shall have also completed instruction in African American history, either as part of the degree program or through other department-approved alternatives, which shall include (i) an understanding of African origins; (ii) the African diaspora; (iii) developments of the Black experience in North America; (iv) the institution of slavery in the United States, including historical perspectives of the enslaved; and (v) how African Americans helped shape and have been shaped by American society.\n\nB. Add-on endorsement requirements in history, political science, geography, and economics. The candidate shall have:\n\n1. Earned a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and hold a teaching license with an endorsement in history, political science, geography, or economics;\n\n2. Completed 21 semester hours of coursework in the additional social science area - history, political science, geography, or economics for which the add-on endorsement is sought; and\n\n3. Completed instruction in African American history, either as part of the degree program or through other department-approved alternatives, which shall include (i) an understanding of African origins; (ii) the African diaspora; (iii) developments of the Black experience in North America; (iv) the institution of slavery in the United States, including historical perspectives of the enslaved; and (v) how African Americans helped shape and have been shaped by American society.","path":["Title 8.
