{"data":{"id":"us-vt/15b-v.s.a.-1204","jurisdiction":"us-vt","citation":"15B V.S.A. § 1204","heading":"Simultaneous proceedings in another state","body":"(a) A tribunal of this State may exercise jurisdiction to establish a support order if the petition or comparable pleading is filed after a pleading is filed in another state or a foreign country only if:\n(1) the petition or comparable pleading in this State is filed before the expiration of the time allowed in the other state or the foreign country for filing a responsive pleading challenging the exercise of jurisdiction by the other state or the foreign country;\n(2) the contesting party timely challenges the exercise of jurisdiction in the other state or foreign country; and\n(3) if relevant, this State is the home state of the child.\n(b) A tribunal of this State may not exercise jurisdiction to establish a support order if the petition or comparable pleading is filed before a petition or comparable pleading is filed in another state or a foreign country if:\n(1) the petition or comparable pleading in the other state or foreign country is filed before the expiration of the time allowed in this State for filing a responsive pleading challenging the exercise of jurisdiction by this State;\n(2) the contesting party timely challenges the exercise of jurisdiction in this State; and\n(3) if relevant, the other state or foreign country is the home state of the child.","path":["Title 15B: Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (1996)","Chapter 012: Jurisdiction"],"source_url":"https://legislature.vermont.gov/statutes/section/15B/012/01204","current_through":"2025 session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T17:17:00Z","sha256":"e3fd57cfd677b5dfe3abece6f65d373ac710a90c60aa869272feb847521da348","source_id":"us-vt","stale":false,"prev":"us-vt/15b-v.s.a.-1203","next":"us-vt/15b-v.s.a.-1205"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
