{"data":{"id":"us-vt/24-v.s.a.-1974","jurisdiction":"us-vt","citation":"24 V.S.A. § 1974","heading":"Enforcement of criminal ordinances","body":"(a)(1) The violation of a criminal ordinance or rule adopted by a municipality under this chapter shall be a misdemeanor.\n(2) The criminal ordinance or rule may provide for a fine or imprisonment, but no fine shall exceed $800.00, nor may any term of imprisonment exceed one year.\n(3) Each day the violation continues shall constitute a separate offense.\n(b) The presiding judge of the Superior Court, on application of the legislative body of a municipality, shall have jurisdiction to enjoin the violation of an ordinance or rule but the election of a municipality to proceed under this subsection shall not prevent prosecutions under subsection (a) of this section.\n(c) Prosecutions of criminal ordinances shall be brought before the Superior Court pursuant to 4 V.S.A. § 32.\n(d) Prosecutions of criminal ordinances may be brought on behalf of the municipality by the municipal attorney or other person designated by the legislative body of the municipality.","path":["Title 24: Municipal and County Government","Chapter 059: Adoption and Enforcement of Ordinances and Rules"],"source_url":"https://legislature.vermont.gov/statutes/section/24/059/01974","current_through":"2025 session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T17:17:05Z","sha256":"0f51e59ce99dab4e2c8db233e78d9c307aa6ff6a3fd234212fa94b31fe9c718d","source_id":"us-vt","stale":false,"prev":"us-vt/24-v.s.a.-1973","next":"us-vt/24-v.s.a.-1974a"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
