{"data":{"id":"us-vt/9-v.s.a.-4456a","jurisdiction":"us-vt","citation":"9 V.S.A. § 4456a","heading":"Residential rental application","body":"(a) A landlord or a landlord’s agent shall not charge an application fee to any individual in order to apply to enter into a rental agreement for a residential dwelling unit. This subsection shall not be construed to prohibit a person from charging a fee to a person in order to apply to rent commercial or nonresidential property.\n(b)(1) In order to conduct a background or credit check, a landlord shall accept any of the following:\n(A) an original or a copy of any unexpired form of government-issued identification;\n(B) an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number; or\n(C) a Social Security number.\n(2) A landlord or a landlord’s agent shall not require a Social Security number for the completion of a residential rental application or refuse to accept an application due to the lack of a Social Security number.","path":["Title 9: Commerce and Trade","Chapter 137: Residential Rental Agreements","Subchapter 002: RESIDENTIAL RENTAL AGREEMENTS"],"source_url":"https://legislature.vermont.gov/statutes/section/09/137/04456a","current_through":"2025 session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T14:47:51Z","sha256":"2a3fb73b267771cf55e003941ff551869571c95224a0c3bd44c133e32625b9aa","source_id":"us-vt","stale":false,"prev":"us-vt/9-v.s.a.-4456","next":"us-vt/9-v.s.a.-4456b"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
