{"data":{"id":"us-wa/rcw-9.38.060","jurisdiction":"us-wa","citation":"RCW 9.38.060","heading":"Digital signature violations.","body":"(1) A person shall not knowingly misrepresent the person's identity or authorization to obtain a public key certificate used to reference a private key for creating a digital signature.\n(2) A person shall not knowingly forge an electronic or digital signature.\n(3) A person shall not knowingly present a public key certificate for which the person is not the owner of the corresponding private key in order to obtain unauthorized access to information or engage in an unauthorized transaction.\n(4) A person who violates this section is guilty of a class C felony punishable under chapter 9A.20 RCW.\n(5)(a) \"Digital signature\" means an electronic signature that is a transformation of a message using an asymmetric cryptosystem such that a person who has the initial message and the signer's public key can accurately determine whether the:\n(i) Transformation was created using the private key that corresponds to the signer's public key; and\n(ii) Initial message has been altered since the transformation was made.\n(b) \"Electronic signature\" has the meaning provided in RCW 1.80.010.","path":["Title 9","Chapter 9.38"],"source_url":"https://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=9.38.060","current_through":"July 15, 2026","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-06T00:46:15Z","sha256":"728dc58263fcf8359def912f901462ab48538db015395095b198494afa9b9a20","source_id":"us-wa","stale":false,"prev":"us-wa/rcw-9.38.020","next":"us-wa/rcw-9.40.040"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
