{"data":{"id":"us/10-cfr-431.282","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"10 CFR 431.282","heading":"Definitions concerning mercury vapor lamp ballasts.","body":"Ballast means a device used with an electric discharge lamp to obtain necessary circuit conditions (voltage, current, and waveform) for starting and operating.\nHigh intensity discharge lamp means an electric-discharge lamp in which—\n(1) The light-producing arc is stabilized by the arc tube wall temperature; and\n(2) The arc tube wall loading is in excess of 3 Watts/cm 2, including such lamps that are mercury vapor, metal halide, and high-pressure sodium lamps.\nMercury vapor lamp means a high intensity discharge lamp, including clear, phosphor-coated, and self-ballasted screw base lamps, in which the major portion of the light is produced by radiation from mercury typically operating at a partial vapor pressure in excess of 100,000 Pa (approximately 1 atm).\nMercury vapor lamp ballast means a device that is designed and marketed to start and operate mercury vapor lamps intended for general illumination by providing the necessary voltage and current.\nSpecialty application mercury vapor lamp ballast means a mercury vapor lamp ballast that—\n(1) Is designed and marketed for operation of mercury vapor lamps used in quality inspection, industrial processing, or scientific use, including fluorescent microscopy and ultraviolet curing; and\n(2) In the case of a specialty application mercury vapor lamp ballast, the label of which—\n(i) Provides that the specialty application mercury vapor lamp ballast is ‘For specialty applications only, not for general illumination’; and\n(ii) Specifies the specific applications for which the ballast is designed.","path":["Title 10—Energy","CHAPTER II—DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY","SUBCHAPTER D—ENERGY CONSERVATION","PART 431—ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM FOR CERTAIN COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT","Subpart P—Mercury Vapor Lamp Ballasts"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-10.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:24:09Z","sha256":"a31d87b7dd6cd1015a26819afaf6aaa0fb9ade7eef436f2173f38ae21342b2a8","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/10-cfr-431.281","next":"us/10-cfr-431.286"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
