{"data":{"id":"us/14-cfr-145.217","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"14 CFR 145.217","heading":"Contract maintenance.","body":"(a) A certificated repair station may contract a maintenance function pertaining to an article to an outside source provided—\n(1) The FAA approves the maintenance function to be contracted to the outside source; and\n(2) The repair station maintains and makes available to its responsible Flight Standards office, in a format acceptable to the FAA, the following information:\n(i) The maintenance functions contracted to each outside facility; and\n(ii) The name of each outside facility to whom the repair station contracts maintenance functions and the type of certificate and ratings, if any, held by each facility.\n(b) A certificated repair station may contract a maintenance function pertaining to an article to a noncertificated person provided—\n(1) The noncertificated person follows a quality control system equivalent to the system followed by the certificated repair station;\n(2) The certificated repair station remains directly in charge of the work performed by the noncertificated person; and\n(3) The certificated repair station verifies, by test and/or inspection, that the work has been performed satisfactorily by the noncertificated person and that the article is airworthy before approving it for return to service.\n(c) A certificated repair station may not provide only approval for return to service of a complete type-certificated product following contract maintenance, preventive maintenance, or alterations.","path":["Title 14—Aeronautics and Space","CHAPTER I—FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION, DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION","SUBCHAPTER H—SCHOOLS AND OTHER CERTIFICATED AGENCIES","PART 145—REPAIR STATIONS","Subpart E—Operating Rules"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-14.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:24:20Z","sha256":"946b4e085f4ef7ab249885f1e61115b29101e07f412687a32393191ca6b27d23","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/14-cfr-145.215","next":"us/14-cfr-145.219"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
