{"data":{"id":"us/20-cfr-498.101","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"20 CFR 498.101","heading":"Definitions.","body":"As used in this part:\nAgency means the Social Security Administration.\nAssessment means the amount described in § 498.104, and includes the plural of that term.\nCommissioner means the Commissioner of Social Security or his or her designees.\nDepartment means the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.\nGeneral Counsel means the General Counsel of the Social Security Administration or his or her designees.\nInspector General means the Inspector General of the Social Security Administration or his or her designees.\nMaterial fact means a fact which the Commissioner of Social Security may consider in evaluating whether an applicant is entitled to benefits under title II or eligible for benefits or payments under title VIII or title XVI of the Social Security Act.\nOtherwise withhold disclosure means the failure to come forward to notify the SSA of a material fact when such person knew or should have known that the withheld fact was material and that such withholding was misleading for purposes of determining eligibility or Social Security benefit amount for that person or another person.\nPenalty means the amount described in § 498.103 and includes the plural of that term.\nPerson means an individual, organization, agency, or other entity.\nRespondent means the person upon whom the Commissioner or the Inspector General has imposed, or intends to impose, a penalty and assessment, as applicable.\nSecretary means the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services or his or her designees.\nSSA means the Social Security Administration.\nSSI means Supplemental Security Income.","path":["Title 20—Employees' Benefits","CHAPTER III—SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION","PART 498—CIVIL MONETARY PENALTIES, ASSESSMENTS AND RECOMMENDED EXCLUSIONS"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-20.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:24:45Z","sha256":"638f1f0be7cb2bf8874e33aefd67aebf393354748b6d95c4616ac4969c87a120","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/20-cfr-498.100","next":"us/20-cfr-498.102"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
