{"data":{"id":"us/21-cfr-172.135","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"21 CFR 172.135","heading":"Disodium EDTA.","body":"The food additive disodium EDTA (disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate) may be safely used in designated foods for the purposes and in accordance with the following prescribed conditions:\n(a) The additive contains a minimum of 99 percent disodium ethylenedia-minetetraacetate dihydrate (C10H14O8N2Na2·2H2O).\n(b) It is used or intended for use as follows:\n(1) Alone, in the following foods at not to exceed the levels prescribed, calculated as anhydrous calcium disodium EDTA:\nFood Limitation (parts per million) Use\nAqueous multivitamin preparations 150 With iron salts as a stabilizer for vitamin B 12 in liquid multivitamin preparations.\nCanned black-eyed peas 145 Promote color retention.\nCanned kidney beans 165 Preservative.\nCanned strawberry pie filling 500 Promote color retention.\nCooked sausage 36 As a cure accelerator with sodium ascorbate or ascorbic acid.\nDressings, nonstandardized 75 Preservative.\nFrench dressing 75 Do.\nFrozen white potatoes including cut potatoes 100 Promote color retention.\nGefilte fish balls or patties in packing medium 1 50 Inhibit discoloration.\nLegumes (all cooked canned, other than black-eyed peas) 165 Promote color retention.\nMayonnaise 75 Preservative.\nReady-to-eat cereal products containing dried bananas 2 315 Promote color retention.\nSalad dressing 75 Preservative.\nSandwich spread 100 Do.\nSauces 75 Do.\n1 Based on total weight of finished product including packing medium.\n2 In dried banana component of cereal product.\n(2) With calcium disodium EDTA (calcium disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate; calcium disodium (ethylenedinitrilo) tetraacetate), in the following foods at not to exceed, in combination, the levels prescribed, calculated as anhydrous C10H12O8N2CaNa2:\nFood Limitation (parts per million) Use\nDressings, nonstandardized 75 Preservative.\nFrench dressing 75 Do.\nMayonnaise 75 Do.\nSalad dressing 75 Do.\nSandwich spread 100 Do.\nSauces 75 Do.\n(3) Alone, as a sequestrant in the nonnutritive sweeteners that are listed in § 180.37 of this chapter and that, in addition, are designed for aqueous solution: Provided, That the amount of the additive, calculated as anhydrous calcium disodium EDTA, does not exceed 0.1 percent by weight of the dry nonnutritive sweetener.\n(c) To assure the safe use of the additive:\n(1) The label and labeling of the additive container shall bear, in addition to the other information required by the act, the name of the additive.\n(2) The label or labeling of the additive container shall bear adequate use directions to provide a final food product that complies with the limitations provided in paragraph (b) of this section.\n(d) In the standardized foods listed in paragraphs (b)(1) and (2) of this section the additives are used only in compliance with the applicable standards of identity for such foods.","path":["Title 21—Food and Drugs","CHAPTER I—FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION, DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES","SUBCHAPTER B—FOOD FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION","PART 172—FOOD ADDITIVES PERMITTED FOR DIRECT ADDITION TO FOOD FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION","Subpart B—Food Preservatives"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-21.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:24:47Z","sha256":"995f19f91c3c0fc5972bff72a1efa1e7c1945f5bc68a5b42deffb420ad2422da","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/21-cfr-172.133","next":"us/21-cfr-172.140"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
