{"data":{"id":"us/25-cfr-243.2","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"25 CFR 243.2","heading":"What terms do I need to know?","body":"Act means the Reindeer Act of September 1, 1937 (50 Stat. 900; 25 U.S.C. 500 et seq.), as amended.\nAlaska Native means Eskimos, Indians, and Aleuts inhabiting Alaska at the time of the Treaty of Cession of Alaska to the United States and their descendants currently living in Alaska.\nAlaskan reindeer means:\n(1) All reindeer descended from those present in Alaska at the time of passage of the Act; and\n(2) Any caribou introduced into animal husbandry or that has joined a reindeer herd.\nBIA means the Bureau of Indian Affairs within the United States Department of the Interior.\nDesignee means the person assigned by the Alaska Regional Director to administer the reindeer program.\nImported reindeer means reindeer brought into Alaska from any region outside of Alaska since passage of the Act.\nNative reindeer organization means any corporation, association, or other organization, whether incorporated or not, composed solely of Alaska Natives, for the purpose of engaging in or promoting the reindeer industry.\nNon-Native means a person who is not an Alaska Native.\nRegional Director means the officer in charge of the Alaska Regional Office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.\nReindeer products mean the meat, hide, antlers, or any other products derived from reindeer.\nTransfer means the conveyance of ownership of reindeer or reindeer products, or any interest in them or interest in an Alaska Native reindeer organization, by any method.\nWe, us and our mean the Regional Director or the Director's designee.","path":["Title 25—Indians","CHAPTER I—BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS, DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR","SUBCHAPTER J—FISH AND WILDLIFE","PART 243—REINDEER IN ALASKA"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-25.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:24:59Z","sha256":"f4bc67efea38e373825dbdd58bf038c1170795ddf8a2e85e2f6d3edcd12691e7","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/25-cfr-243.1","next":"us/25-cfr-243.3"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
