{"data":{"id":"us/29-cfr-1636.2","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"29 CFR 1636.2","heading":"Definitions—general.","body":"(a) Commission means the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission established by section 705 of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. 2000e-4.\n(b) Covered entity means respondent as defined in section 701(n) of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. 2000e(n), and includes:\n(1) Employer, which is a person engaged in an industry affecting commerce who has 15 or more employees, as defined in section 701(b) of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. 2000e(b);\n(2) Employing office, as defined in section 101 of the Congressional Accountability Act of 1995, 2 U.S.C. 1301, and 3 U.S.C. 411(c);\n(3) An entity employing a State employee (or the employee of a political subdivision of a State) described in section 304(a) of the Government Employee Rights Act of 1991, 42 U.S.C. 2000e-16c(a); and\n(4) An entity to which section 717(a) of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. 2000e-16(a), applies.\n(c) Employee means:\n(1) An employee (including an applicant), as defined in section 701(f) of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. 2000e(f);\n(2) [Reserved]\n(3) A covered employee (including an applicant), as defined in 3 U.S.C. 411(c);\n(4) A State employee (including an applicant) (or the employee or applicant of a political subdivision of a State) described in section 304(a) of the Government Employee Rights Act of 1991, 42 U.S.C. 2000e-16c(a); and\n(5) An employee (including an applicant) to which section 717(a) of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. 2000e-16(a), applies.\n(d) Person means person as defined by section 701(a) of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. 2000e(a).","path":["Title 29—Labor","Subtitle B—Regulations Relating to Labor","CHAPTER XIV—EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY COMMISSION","PART 1636—PREGNANT WORKERS FAIRNESS ACT"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-29.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:25:20Z","sha256":"40d31baca310e1e317306169b2972fe65a962dab00071cec8270b704d6d82e0e","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/29-cfr-1636.1","next":"us/29-cfr-1636.3"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
