{"data":{"id":"us/40-cfr-35.343","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"40 CFR 35.343","heading":"Definitions.","body":"In addition to the definitions in § 35.102, the following definitions apply to the Pollution Prevention State Grants program and to §§ 35.340 through 35.349:\n(a) Pollution prevention/source reduction is any practice that:\n(1) Reduces the amount of any hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant entering any waste stream or otherwise released into the environment (including fugitive emissions) prior to recycling, treatment, or disposal;\n(2) Reduces the hazards to public health and the environment associated with the release of such substances, pollutants, or contaminants; or\n(3) Reduces or eliminates the creation of pollutants through:\n(i) Increased efficiency in the use of raw materials, energy, water, or other resources; or\n(ii) Protection of natural resources by conservation.\n(b) Pollution prevention/source reduction does not include any practice which alters the physical, chemical, or biological characteristics or the volume of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant through a process or activity which itself is not integral to and necessary for the production of a product or the providing of a service.","path":["Title 40—Protection of Environment","CHAPTER I—ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY","SUBCHAPTER B—GRANTS AND OTHER FEDERAL ASSISTANCE","PART 35—STATE AND LOCAL ASSISTANCE","Subpart A—Environmental Program Grants"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-40.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:04Z","sha256":"f52beb7dc76ebfd993328e1c7a6c62246aa2d4a20e75aecb2650d0e49202545b","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/40-cfr-35.342","next":"us/40-cfr-35.345"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
