The metal-bearing waste streams and cyanide-bearing waste streams are defined as those waste streams listed in appendix A of this part, plus any additional OCPSF process wastewater streams identified by the permitting authority on a case-by-case basis as metal or cyanide bearing based upon a determination that such streams contain significant amounts of the pollutants identified above. Any such streams designated as metal or cyanide bearing must be treated independently of other metal or cyanide bearing waste streams unless the permitting authority determines that the combination of such streams, prior to treatment, with the Appendix A waste streams will result in substantial reduction of these pollutants. This determination must be based upon a review of relevant engineering, production, and sampling and analysis information.\nEffluent characteristics BAT effluent limitations and NSPS 1\nMaximum for any one day Maximum for monthly average\nAcenaphthene 47 19\nAcenaphthylene 47 19\nAcrylonitrile 232 94\nAnthracene 47 19\nBenzene 134 57\nBenzo(a)anthracene 47 19\n3,4-Benzofluoranthene 48 20\nBenzo(k)fluoranthene 47 19\nBenzo(a)pyrene 48 20\nBis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate 258 95\nCarbon Tetrachloride 380 142\nChlorobenzene 380 142\nChloroethane 295 110\nChloroform 325 111\nChrysene 47 19\nDi-n-butyl phthalate 43 20\n1,2-Dichlorobenzene 794 196\n1,3-Dichlorobenzene 380 142\n1,4-Dichlorobenzene 380 142\n1,1-Dichloroethane 59 22\n1,2-Dichloroethane 574 180\n1,1-Dichloroethylene 60 22\n1,2-trans-Dichloroethylene 66 25\n1,2-Dichloropropane 794 196\n1,3-Dichloropropylene 794 196\nDiethyl phthalate 113 46\n2,4-Dimethylphenol 47 19\nDimethyl phthalate 47 19\n4,6-Dinitro-o-cresol 277 78\n2,4-Dinitrophenol 4,291 1,207\nEthylbenzene 380 142\nFluoranthene 54 22\nFluorene 47 19\nHexachlorobenzene 794 196\nHexachlorobutadiene 380 142\nHexachloroethane 794 196\nMethyl Chloride 295 110\nMethylene Chloride 170 36\nNaphthalene 47 19\nNitrobenzene 6,402 2,237\n2-Nitrophenol 231 65\n4-Nitrophenol 576 162\nPhenanthrene 47 19\nPhenol 47 19\nPyrene 48 20\nTetrachloroethylene 164 52\nToluene 74 28\nTotal Chromium 2,770 1,110\nTotal Copper 3,380 1,450\nTotal Cyanide 1,200 420\nTotal Lead 690 320\nTotal Nickel 3,980 1,690\nTotal Zinc 2 2,610 1,050\n1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene 794 196\n1,1,1-Trichloroethane 59 22\n1,1,2-Trichloroethane 127 32\nTrichloroethylene 69 26\nVinyl Chloride 172 97\n1 All units are micrograms per liter.\n2 Total Zinc for Rayon Fiber Manufacture that uses the viscose process and Acrylic Fibers Manufacture that uses the zinc chloride/solvent process is 6,796 µg/l and 3,325 µg/l for maximum for any one day and maximum for monthly average, respectively.","path":["Title 40—Protection of Environment","CHAPTER I—ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY","SUBCHAPTER N—EFFLUENT GUIDELINES AND STANDARDS","PART 414—ORGANIC CHEMICALS, PLASTICS, AND SYNTHETIC FIBERS","Subpart J—Direct Discharge Point Sources That Do Not Use End-of-Pipe Biological Treatment"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-40.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:04Z","sha256":"a83175eeb62a1c426079ff275ca121ac0cbcbf384a759ee905b4b3369271ea28","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/40-cfr-414.100","next":"us/40-cfr-414.110"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
