{"data":{"id":"us/42-cfr-410.140","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"42 CFR 410.140","heading":"Definitions.","body":"For purposes of this subpart, the following definitions apply:\nADA stands for the American Diabetes Association.\nApproved entity means an individual, physician, or entity accredited by an approved organization as meeting one of the sets of quality standards described in § 410.144 and approved by CMS under § 410.141(e) to furnish training.\nDeemed entity means an individual, physician, or entity accredited by an approved organization, but that has not yet been approved by CMS under § 410.145(b) to furnish training.\nDiabetes means diabetes mellitus, a condition of abnormal glucose metabolism.\nNSDSMEP stands for the National Standards for Diabetes Self Management Education Programs.\nOrganization means a national accreditation organization.\nRural means an area that meets one of the following conditions:\n(1) Is not urbanized (as defined by the Bureau of the Census) and that is designated by the chief executive officer of the State, and certified by the Secretary, as an area with a shortage of personal health services.\n(2) Is designated by the Secretary either as an area with a shortage of personal health services or as a health professional shortage area.\n(3) Is designated by the Indian Health Service as a health service delivery area as defined in § 36.15 of this title.\nTraining means outpatient diabetes self-management training.","path":["Title 42—Public Health","CHAPTER IV—CENTERS FOR MEDICARE \u0026 MEDICAID SERVICES, DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES","SUBCHAPTER B—MEDICARE PROGRAM","PART 410—SUPPLEMENTARY MEDICAL INSURANCE (SMI) BENEFITS","Subpart H—Outpatient Diabetes Self-Management Training and Diabetes Outcome Measurements"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-42.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:11Z","sha256":"bcb1f985c23672c4547b0485cc2b8946d01df359d2bdf403da7115b28ce49449","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/42-cfr-410.134","next":"us/42-cfr-410.141"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
