{"data":{"id":"us/46-cfr-108.173","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"46 CFR 108.173","heading":"Class I, Division 2 locations.","body":"The following are Class I, Division 2 locations:\n(a) An enclosed space that has any open portion of the mud circulating system from the final degassing discharge to the mud suction connection at the mud pit.\n(b) A location in the weather that is—\n(1) Within the boundaries of the drilling derrick up to a height of 3 m (10 ft.) above the drill floor;\n(2) Below the drill floor and within a radius of 3 m (10 ft.) of a possible source of gas release; or\n(3) Within 1.5 m (5 ft.) of the boundaries of any ventilation outlet, access, or other opening to a Class I, Division 2 space.\n(c) A location that is—\n(1) Within 1.5 m (5 ft.) of a semi-enclosed Class I, Division 1 location indicated in § 108.171(b); or\n(2) Within 1.5 m (5 ft.) of a Class I, Division 1 space indicated in § 108.171(e).\n(d) A semi-enclosed area that is below and contiguous with the drill floor to the boundaries of the derrick or to the extent of any enclosure which is liable to trap gasses.\n(e) A semi-enclosed derrick to the extent of its enclosure above the drill floor or to a height of 3 m (10 ft.) above the drill floor, whichever is greater.\n(f) Except as provided in § 108.175 an enclosed space that has an opening into a Class I, Division 2 location.","path":["Title 46—Shipping","CHAPTER I—COAST GUARD, DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY","SUBCHAPTER I-A—MOBILE OFFSHORE DRILLING UNITS","PART 108—DESIGN AND EQUIPMENT","Subpart B—Construction and Arrangement"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-46.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:22Z","sha256":"d209a2fc40680f15801f801e981ddb9bf63c80721ebf5df4d6dc00e26bd2eed6","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/46-cfr-108.171","next":"us/46-cfr-108.175"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
