For the purpose of this subchapter, the following are vital systems:\n(1) Systems for fill, transfer, and service of fuel oil.\n(2) Fire-main systems.\n(3) Fixed gaseous fire-extinguishing systems.\n(4) Bilge systems.\n(5) Ballast systems.\n(6) Steering systems and steering-control systems.\n(7) Propulsion systems and their necessary auxiliaries and control systems.\n(8) Systems for transfer and control of cargo, for integral tanks or fixed independent tanks, in compliance with § 125.110 of this subchapter.\n(9) Ship's service and emergency electrical-generation systems and their auxiliaries vital to the vessel's survivability and safety.\n(10) Any other marine-engineering system identified by the cognizant OCMI as crucial to the survival of the vessel or to the protection of the personnel aboard.\n(b) For the purpose of this subchapter, a system not identified by paragraph (a) of this section is a non-vital system.","path":["Title 46—Shipping","CHAPTER I—COAST GUARD, DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY","SUBCHAPTER L—OFFSHORE SUPPLY VESSELS","PART 128—MARINE ENGINEERING: EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEMS","Subpart A—General"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-46.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:22Z","sha256":"57b867de403cf8bc8e8a82a00f9c36dbd7c2b35a0f2c21831166998228bba48d","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/46-cfr-128.120","next":"us/46-cfr-128.210"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
