{"data":{"id":"us/46-cfr-15.915","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"46 CFR 15.915","heading":"Engineer officer endorsements.","body":"The following MMC officer endorsements authorize the holder to serve as noted, within any restrictions on the MMC, and as provided by § 15.401:\n(a) A Designated Duty Engineer (DDE) endorsement authorizes service as Chief or Assistant Engineer on vessels of less than 500 GT in the following manners:\n(1) A DDE limited to vessels of less than 1,000 horsepower or less than 4,000 horsepower may serve only on near-coastal, Great Lakes, or inland waters.\n(2) A DDE with no horsepower limitations may serve on any waters.\n(3) When serving on a vessel to which STCW applies, the appropriate STCW endorsement must also be held.\n(b) A Chief Engineer-Limited endorsement authorizes service as Chief or Assistant Engineer on vessels of any gross tons on inland waters and of less than 1,600 GRT on ocean, near-coastal, or Great Lakes waters.\n(c) An Assistant Engineer-Limited endorsement authorizes service on vessels of any gross tons on inland waters and of less than 1,600 GRT on ocean, near-coastal, or Great Lakes waters.","path":["Title 46—Shipping","CHAPTER I—COAST GUARD, DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY","SUBCHAPTER B—MERCHANT MARINE OFFICERS AND SEAMEN","PART 15—MANNING REQUIREMENTS","Subpart I—Equivalents"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-46.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:22Z","sha256":"69ece1046cb41c1501cb8939e4d92a7060c528f136a536465a449398794f3e1c","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/46-cfr-15.910","next":"us/46-cfr-15.1001"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
