{"data":{"id":"us/46-cfr-162.050-3","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"46 CFR 162.050-3","heading":"-3 Definitions.","body":"As used in this subpart—\n15 ppm separator means a separator that is designed to remove enough oil from an oil-water mixture to provide a resulting mixture that has an oil concentration of 15 ppm or less.\nBilge alarm means an instrument that is designed to measure the oil content of oily mixtures from machinery space bilges and fuel oil tanks that carry ballast and activate an alarm at a set concentration limit and record date, time, alarm status, and operating status of the 15 ppm separator.\nIndependent laboratory means a laboratory that—\n(1) Has the equipment and procedures necessary to approve the electrical components described in §§ 162.050-21(b) and 162.050-25(c), or to conduct the test described in § 162.050-37(a); and\n(2) Is not owned or controlled by a manufacturer, supplier, or vendor of separators, oil content meters, or bilge alarms.\nOil content meter or meter means a component of the oil discharge monitoring and control system that is designed to measure the oil content of cargo residues from cargo tanks and oily mixtures combined with these residues.\nPPM means parts per million by volume of oil in water.\nResponse time means the time elapsed between an alteration in the sample being supplied to the bilge alarm and the ppm display showing the correct response.","path":["Title 46—Shipping","CHAPTER I—COAST GUARD, DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY","SUBCHAPTER Q—EQUIPMENT, CONSTRUCTION, AND MATERIALS: SPECIFICATIONS AND APPROVAL","PART 162—ENGINEERING EQUIPMENT","Subpart 162.050—Pollution Prevention Equipment"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-46.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:22Z","sha256":"df8250227a1c76a856fd167e10c1ed9f9da465e010a117830837741d76b7121d","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/46-cfr-162.050-1","next":"us/46-cfr-162.050-4"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
