{"data":{"id":"us/46-cfr-181.420","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"46 CFR 181.420","heading":"Pre-engineered fixed gas fire extinguishing systems.","body":"(a) A pre-engineered fixed gas fire extinguishing system must:\n(1) Be approved by the Commandant;\n(2) Be capable of manual actuation from outside the space in addition to automatic actuation by a heat detector;\n(3) Automatically shut down all power ventilation systems and all engines that draw intake air from within the protected space; and\n(4) Be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.\n(b) A vessel on which a pre-engineered fixed gas fire extinguishing system is installed must have the following equipment at the operating station:\n(1) A light to indicate discharge;\n(2) An audible alarm that sounds upon discharge; and\n(3) A means to reset devices used to automatically shut down ventilation systems and engines as required by paragraph (a)(3) of this section.\n(c) Only one pre-engineered fixed gas fire extinguishing system is allowed to be installed in each space protected by such a system.","path":["Title 46—Shipping","CHAPTER I—COAST GUARD, DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY","SUBCHAPTER T—SMALL PASSENGER VESSELS (UNDER 100 GROSS TONS)","PART 181—FIRE PROTECTION EQUIPMENT","Subpart D—Fixed Fire Extinguishing and Detection Systems"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-46.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:22Z","sha256":"da1f657c13ff636d2d94707de08fa78d2fa9564a586c1db09773d6db8de01c76","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/46-cfr-181.410","next":"us/46-cfr-181.425"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
