{"data":{"id":"us/46-cfr-182.620","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"46 CFR 182.620","heading":"Auxiliary means of steering.","body":"(a) Except as provided in paragraph (c) of this section, a vessel must be provided with an auxiliary means of steering that is:\n(1) Of adequate strength;\n(2) Capable of moving the rudder from 15 degrees on one side to 15 degrees on the other side in not more than 60 seconds with the vessel at one-half its maximum service speed ahead, or 7 knots, whichever is greater; and\n(3) Controlled from a location that permits safe maneuvering of the vessel and does not expose the person operating the auxiliary means of steering to personnel hazards during normal or heavy weather operation.\n(b) A suitable hand tiller may be acceptable as the auxiliary means of steering where satisfactory to the cognizant OCMI.\n(c) An auxiliary means of steering need not be provided if:\n(1) The main steering gear and its controls are provided in duplicate;\n(2) Multiple screw propulsion, with independent pilothouse control for each screw, is provided, and the vessel is capable of being steered using pilothouse control;\n(3) No regular rudder is fitted and steering action is obtained by a change of setting of the propelling unit; or\n(4) Where a rudder and hand tiller are the main steering gear.","path":["Title 46—Shipping","CHAPTER I—COAST GUARD, DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY","SUBCHAPTER T—SMALL PASSENGER VESSELS (UNDER 100 GROSS TONS)","PART 182—MACHINERY INSTALLATION","Subpart F—Steering Systems"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-46.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:22Z","sha256":"6ccce1ceaa538cbb0ffcaf7af2bee2a78167c9f0ecf0e0c5095f535cc9efe926","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/46-cfr-182.610","next":"us/46-cfr-182.700"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
