{"data":{"id":"us/46-cfr-25.45-1","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"46 CFR 25.45-1","heading":"-1 Heating and lighting systems on vessels carrying passengers for hire.","body":"(a) No fuel may be used in any heating or lighting system on any vessel carrying passengers for hire without the approval of Commandant (CG-ENG), except—\n(1) Alcohol, solid,\n(2) Alcohol, liquid, combustible,\n(3) Fuel oil, No. 1, No. 2, or No. 3,\n(4) Kerosene,\n(5) Wood or,\n(6) Coal.\n(b) Heating and lighting systems using alcohol must meet the following requirements:\n(1) Containers of solidified alcohol must be properly secured to a fixed base.\n(2) Fluid alcohol burners, where wet priming is used, must have—\n(i) A catch pan of not less than 3/4” depth secured inside the frame of the stove; or\n(ii) The metal protection under the stove flanged up at least 3/4” to form a pan.\n(c) Heating and lighting systems using kerosene or fuel oil must meet the following requirements:\n(1) Where wet priming is used, each system must have—\n(i) A catch pan of not less than 3/4” depth secured inside the frame of the stove; or\n(ii) The metal protection under the stove flanged up at least 3/4” to form a pan.\n(2) Fuel tanks must be—\n(i) Separated from the stove that they serve;\n(ii) Mounted in a location open to the atmosphere or mounted inside a compartment that is vented to the atmosphere; and\n(iii) Fitted with an outside fill and vent.\n(d) Heating systems using wood or coal installed after August 9, 1989, shall be installed in accordance with the guidelines in chapter 6 of NFPA 302.","path":["Title 46—Shipping","CHAPTER I—COAST GUARD, DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY","SUBCHAPTER C—UNINSPECTED VESSELS","PART 25—REQUIREMENTS","Subpart 25.45—Cooking, Heating, and Lighting Systems"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-46.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:22Z","sha256":"ab49749b28332fdefe7118e9b3ce6a9c07300a11167450813939927aa35c03b6","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/46-cfr-25.40-1","next":"us/46-cfr-25.45-2"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
