{"data":{"id":"us/49-cfr-228.307","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"49 CFR 228.307","heading":"Definitions.","body":"As used in this subpart—\ndB(A) means the sound pressure level in decibels measured on the A-weighted scale.\nDecibel (dB) means a logarithmic unit of measurement that expresses the magnitude of a physical quantity (usually power or intensity) relative to a specified reference level. For the measurement of noise in this subpart, the reference level for the intensity of sound pressure in air is 20 micropascals.\nFoot-candle means a one lumen of light density per square foot.\nHVAC means heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.\nLavatory means a basin or similar vessel used primarily for washing of the hands, arms, face, and head.\nLeq(8) means the equivalent steady state sound level that in 8 hours would contain the same acoustic energy as the time-varying sound level during the same time period.\nNonwater carriage toilet means a toilet not connected to a sewer.\nOccupant means an employee or an MOW worker (both as defined in § 228.5) whose sleeping quarters are a camp car.\nPpm means parts per million.\nPotable water means water that meets the quality standards prescribed in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Primary Drinking Water Standards set forth in 40 CFR part 141.\nPotable water system means the containers, tanks, and associated plumbing lines and valves that hold, convey, and dispense potable water within a camp car.\nToilet means a chemical toilet, a recirculating toilet, a combustion toilet, or a toilet that is flushed with water; however, a urinal is not a toilet.\nToilet room means a room containing a toilet.\nToxic material means a material in concentration or amount of such toxicity as to constitute a recognized hazard that is causing or is likely to cause death or serious physical harm.\nWatering means the act of filling potable water systems.","path":["Title 49—Transportation","Subtitle B—Other Regulations Relating to Transportation","CHAPTER II—FEDERAL RAILROAD ADMINISTRATION, DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION","PART 228—PASSENGER TRAIN EMPLOYEE HOURS OF SERVICE; RECORDKEEPING AND REPORTING; SLEEPING QUARTERS","Subpart E—Safety and Health Requirements for Camp Cars Provided by Railroads as Sleeping Quarters"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-49.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:34Z","sha256":"2b119e593d11b0228861f0af3a59c21b9dabc9b8816937c61786219d0a65e919","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/49-cfr-228.305","next":"us/49-cfr-228.309"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
