{"data":{"id":"us/49-cfr-237.51","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"49 CFR 237.51","heading":"Railroad bridge engineers.","body":"(a) A railroad bridge engineer shall be a person who is determined by the track owner to be competent to perform the following functions as they apply to the particular engineering work to be performed:\n(1) Determine the forces and stresses in railroad bridges and bridge components;\n(2) Prescribe safe loading conditions for railroad bridges;\n(3) Prescribe inspection and maintenance procedures for railroad bridges; and\n(4) Design repairs and modifications to railroad bridges.\n(b) The educational qualifications of a railroad bridge engineer shall include either:\n(1) A degree in engineering granted by a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET, Inc. or its successor organization as a professional engineering curriculum, or a degree from a program accredited as a professional engineering curriculum by a foreign organization recognized by ABET, Inc. or its successor; or\n(2) Current registration as a professional engineer.\n(c) Nothing in this part affects the States' authority to regulate the professional practice of engineering.","path":["Title 49—Transportation","Subtitle B—Other Regulations Relating to Transportation","CHAPTER II—FEDERAL RAILROAD ADMINISTRATION, DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION","PART 237—BRIDGE SAFETY STANDARDS","Subpart C—Qualifications and Designations of Responsible Persons"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-49.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:34Z","sha256":"3ee0072c31f15a3165a4177d81d6e6d41ad7fab4c129964f068cd9c52878d7d1","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/49-cfr-237.33","next":"us/49-cfr-237.53"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
