{"data":{"id":"us/49-cfr-383.121","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"49 CFR 383.121","heading":"Requirements for hazardous materials endorsement.","body":"In order to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement, each applicant must have such knowledge as is required of a driver of a hazardous materials laden vehicle, from information contained in 49 CFR parts 171, 172, 173, 177, 178, and 397, on the following:\n(a) Hazardous materials regulations including:\n(1) Hazardous materials table;\n(2) Shipping paper requirements;\n(3) Marking;\n(4) Labeling;\n(5) Placarding requirements;\n(6) Hazardous materials packaging;\n(7) Hazardous materials definitions and preparation;\n(8) Other regulated material (e.g., ORM-D);\n(9) Reporting hazardous materials accidents; and\n(10) Tunnels and railroad crossings.\n(b) Hazardous materials handling including:\n(1) Forbidden materials and packages;\n(2) Loading and unloading materials;\n(3) Cargo segregation;\n(4) Passenger carrying buses and hazardous materials;\n(5) Attendance of motor vehicles;\n(6) Parking;\n(7) Routes;\n(8) Cargo tanks; and\n(9) “Safe havens.”\n(c) Operation of emergency equipment including:\n(1) Use of equipment to protect the public;\n(2) Special precautions for equipment to be used in fires;\n(3) Special precautions for use of emergency equipment when loading or unloading a hazardous materials laden motor vehicle; and\n(4) Use of emergency equipment for tank vehicles.\n(d) Emergency response procedures including:\n(1) Special care and precautions for different types of accidents;\n(2) Special precautions for driving near a fire and carrying hazardous materials, and smoking and carrying hazardous materials;\n(3) Emergency procedures; and\n(4) Existence of special requirements for transporting Class 1.1 and 1.2 explosives.\n(e) Operating practices and procedures not otherwise specified.","path":["Title 49—Transportation","Subtitle B—Other Regulations Relating to Transportation","CHAPTER III—FEDERAL MOTOR CARRIER SAFETY ADMINISTRATION, DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION","SUBCHAPTER B—FEDERAL MOTOR CARRIER SAFETY REGULATIONS","PART 383—COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE STANDARDS; REQUIREMENTS AND PENALTIES","Subpart G—Required Knowledge and Skills"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-49.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:34Z","sha256":"4aac708d8ac2b33e6edb4d34d4317e8269309cedb06ac5f050238580a76ba887","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/49-cfr-383.119","next":"us/49-cfr-383.123"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
