{"data":{"id":"us/49-cfr-840.2","jurisdiction":"us","citation":"49 CFR 840.2","heading":"Definitions.","body":"As used in this part, the following words or phrases are defined as follows:\n(a) Railroad means any system of surface transportation of persons or property over rails. It includes, but is not limited to, line-haul freight and passenger-carrying railroads, and rapid transit, commuter, scenic, subway, and elevated railways.\n(b) Accident means any collision, derailment, or explosion involving railroad trains, locomotives, and cars; or any other loss-causing event involving the operation of such railroad equipment that results in a fatality to a passenger or employee, or the emergency evacuation of persons.\n(c) Joint operations means rail operations conducted on a track used jointly or in common by two or more railroads subject to this part, or operation of a train, locomotive, or car by one railroad over the track of another railroad.\n(d) Fatality means the death of a person either at the time an accident occurs or within 24 hours thereafter.","path":["Title 49—Transportation","Subtitle B—Other Regulations Relating to Transportation","CHAPTER VIII—NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD","PART 840—RULES PERTAINING TO NOTIFICATION OF RAILROAD ACCIDENTS"],"source_url":"https://www.ecfr.gov/api/versioner/v1/full/2026-08-25/title-49.xml","current_through":"2026-08-25","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:26:34Z","sha256":"468796da4b8575d490d0e9755284f22881e55ebfdeca857a3d5e7957a5a7ec36","source_id":"us-cfr","stale":true,"prev":"us/49-cfr-840.1","next":"us/49-cfr-840.3"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
