Ala. Code § 45-57A-63.62: Assistant City Manager.

There shall be employed an assistant city manager. The assistant city manager shall perform the duties of the city manager during the temporary absence or temporary disability of the city manager. The council may by resolution appoint a qualified administrative officer of the city to perform the duties of the city manager in the event of the temporary absence of the city manager and the assistant city manager.
