Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 160, § 235: Spark arresters

Section 235. Every corporation operating a railroad shall install and maintain on locomotives in its service spark arresters or other suitable devices capable of preventing the discharge of sparks or other material which could start a fire. Said spark arresters or other suitable devices shall be subject to the approval and inspection of the department.
