Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 275, § 16: Remission of portion of forfeited penalty

Section 16. If, upon a suit brought on such recognizance, the penalty thereof is adjudged forfeited, the court may, upon petition of a defendant, remit such portion of it as it finds ought to be remitted.
