(1) If the board finds that a member died as a direct and proximate result of injury received in the course of the member's service, a survivorship benefit must be paid to the member's surviving spouse or dependent child in the same manner as provided for in 19-6-505(2) through (4).

(2) The retirement benefit must equal 50% of the highest average compensation of the member.
