N.J. Stat. § 2A:44-27: Determination of amount of damages.

If judgment is rendered for the motor vehicle owner or person entitled to possession of the motor vehicle, the court may fix and determine the amount of damages suffered by the motor vehicle owner or person entitled to possession of the motor vehicle for the seizure and detention of the motor vehicle or part thereof, and render a judgment for such amount against the garage keeper.
