N.J. Stat. § 40:68-30: Vacancies; special election; term

TITLE 40 MUNICIPALITIES AND COUNTIES

Whenever a vacancy occurs, a special election shall be held within the district to fill such vacancy. Any person so elected shall serve for the unexpired term and until a successor is elected.
